An excellent, good-size old African Kifwebe mask of the Luba (or ‘BaLuba’, meaning ‘people of’ Luba). This very distinctive, very traditional type of mask varies from those of neighboring tribes by its soft features and roundness. The concentric circles symbolize the link between the world of the living and the ancestral spirit world. In ceremonies, wearing the mask, the dancer becomes the embodiment of the spirit(s) called upon to aid in maintaining social-political harmony, or in the performance of other traditional functions, such as initiations. This is an older mask that was used in dances, not one made for the market: beautiful age wear and patina, a few old cracks, smoothed surface areas from wearing and handling, such as one would expect with of an old African mask. 14 1/2” length, 12 1/2” width, 7” depth. $295.
