What Can a Professional Proofreader & Editor Do for You?
*Improve Clarity & Flow *Fix Messy Typos & Other Errors *Help with Formatting
*Check Mechanics & Grammar *Proofread for Publication *Writing for ESL students *Fact-checking
Can AI complete a book-length manuscript, a white paper, ad copy, or a term paper for you? Sure! But the end result is bound to be an often clunky, hallucinatory mess that you'll spend even more time trying to "humanize" and clean up, trying to pass off as your own original work. Tools like Grammarly too often "get in your way," and other gimmicks that aim to circumvent AI detection are not foolproof.
Believe me. There are no easy shortcuts.
What if there's a better solution? One that balances quality and value. There is.
Why I Chose Freelance Editing/About Me:
I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN. During my junior year, I worked as a web copywriter for one of the Midwest's best known sporting goods retailers before pivoting to the world of literary publishing. After having multiple works of my own published in Haute Dish (Metro State's literary journal), I became the managing editor and business manager (2018-2019) and stayed on as an editorial review board member after completing my degree program. My duties at Haute Dish included evaluating poetry and prose for potential publication, recruiting staff, and increasing submissions and visibility.
Immediately after graduation, I completed two certificates in editing from a proofreader and entrepreneur who started at Harlequin and went on to work for Penguin Random House. My first experience working in trade publishing was in the Contracts, Rights & Royalties department at Capstone Publishing where I put my proofreading acumen to the test, reviewing and writing legal contracts for authors, illustrators, and designers. I also calculated and assisted with the delivery of royalty payments, general correspondence, and anti-piracy efforts.
Deciding that I wanted to work in editorial, in late 2021, I started freelancing and I was recommended by local author and creative writing professor, Suzanne Nielsen. I took a contract role at a local indie press, Oleb Books (now Oleb Publishing LLC). There, I was the assistant editor and editorial consultant for Face Up: A Collection of Poems (2022). My duties included taking an ARC (advance reader [or review] copy) and shaping it into a final, polished, publishable manuscript; compiling and editing the book's accolades page; and writing the marketing copy for Amazon and other platforms.
More recently, I worked for Language Corps (an AmeriCorps program) where I worked with ESL students at Capitol Hill Magnet School (SPPS), helping them build a solid academic foundation and improve their mastery of US English.
Competitive Advantage:
Because my training included US and UK/Canadian/Australian English, I have the capacity to work remotely virtually anywhere a variety of English is read, spoken, and written.
Contact me via CL mail relay and let's get to work! I look forward to helping your writing shine.
(All work is done remotely, and meetings typically take place over Zoom.)
