I've gotten a lot of responses from people who apparently think I'm talking about "smooth jazz". Nope. Dicking around with the blues scale on a synthed-up soprano sax for retirees isn't what I'm looking to do here.
So here's the thing: I went to college to study classical guitar but 1) life got in the way and music went on the back burner in pursuit of other career choices 2) I'm from St. Louis, MO so Jazz and Blues has always come more naturally to me because it's always been in my ear and really held more interest.
I was never a very good jazz guitarist... I couldn't hang with the other jazz musicians at my school or in that city when I tried because the classical bullshit took over. BUT... I turned out to be a pretty decent vocalist.. I'd imagined it was because I approached vocals like a musician and not like a narcissist (I know it's a generalization, but hey). I pretty-much knew all the standards by heart anyway so I just went with it-- and I was happy and joyful when things really came together with a group. It didn't matter whether there was an audience or not.
So as I've said before, life gets in the way. I did a 180 on my career. But if I was living in a city that had a vibrant jazz scene with a jam session I'd always wander in. While in DC I'd hit up and sing at HR-57 Center for the Preservation of Jazz. I remember the first time I walked in and asked to sing they kinda laughed at me and said "what do you want to do?"... expecting "Fly me to the Moon" or some crooner shit to impress dumb girls. I responded: "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise". So we did that and four more tunes. Good times. Same thing goes for NYC, Chicago (Sunday nights at the Velvet Lounge was awesome). The years in Montreal were awful though. Despite the festival and Oscar Peterson, there is NO jazz scene...
I digress. Now at 42 I'm retired from my career and find myself settled in MSP. What I'm looking for is other like-minded musicians who would like to get together in the interests of the art form. To do standards and test the limits of them. It doesn't matter whether we gig or we don't... I just want to create something beautiful and greater than the sum of it's parts.
