Runs and drives well, solid car mechanically. Mazda reportedly only made 1841 R package Miatas from 1994-97. It was meant to be the more "race" focused trim and included stiffer Bilstein shocks, upgraded sway bars and tie rod ends, and most notably the torsen limited slip differential. Cosmetic upgrades also included front and rear lips/spoiler, and the red painted Miata badge on the rear. This one has koni yellow adjustable shocks and an aftermarket front sway bar. It has a hard dog roll bar, which is nice quality as well. Other than that, it's pretty much all stock, no engine modifications.
R packages were also stripped of most options for weight saving including power steering, and I think the manual steering is much more engaging and the car is light enough it's still very easy to maneuver at low speed. The only option offered was A/C, which this does have but isn't working.
I've owned it for 5 years and it's been very reliable and a lot of fun. Drove it during the summers and always garage kept it in the winter. Haven't had to do much to it other than basic maintenance. I did replace the top and rain rail 2 summers ago. I've also replaced the shifter bushings, gear oil, a couple engine seals, spark plugs and wires, etc.
Cons/quirks
Definitely a driver, not a show/collector car. Shows plenty of wear and tear inside and out.
Clean overall but does have some surface rust shown in pics. Underbody is pretty clean, typical surface rust on the suspension, brakes, etc.
Exhaust is rusted and could use work.
Oil pressure reads low on the gauge. I've been running it with a test gauge hooked up and actual oil pressure is fine, engine feels perfectly healthy. I ordered a sending unit from eBay and hoping that fixes it.
Engine does leak some oil.
Radio deleted by previous owner. In place he installed an amp connected to an aux plus 2 USBs ran to the center console.
Seatbelts don't retract easily due to the roll bar running right in front of the mechanisms. The top can also be difficult to latch due to the roll bar.
Flashing air bag light.
Great for someone who's looking for a special edition that's extra engaging and feels like a go kart on the road, or could be a good setup for autocross.
