Vintage Norton Ceramic Turn Screw Canister, Stoneware Ball Mill Grinding Jar from the 1950s.
With greater strength and chip resistance than conventional porcelain jars. Each jar includes a precision-ground, porcelain cover; neoprene gasket; and locking handle for a leak-tight fit. Leakproof fit. Positive lid locking bar and hand wheel for quick easy opening and closing.
Made is USA / US Stoneware
The cast iron yolk is green and the screw knob is a silver metal hexagon. When unscrewed, the yolk arms rotate to the notches in the rim of the crock and the lid lifts off. There is a black rubber gasket to ensure a tight fit.
There is a blue and silver foil sticker on the lid that says Norton.
This canister was made for laboratory use with a planetary ball mill, which is a benchtop unit designed to pulverize soft, fibrous and brittle materials. The mill develops extremely high centrifugal forces which these canisters are designed to withstand.
Alumina grinding media is typically used with these canisters, so you can grind down to the particle size you need to achieve. A bag of this media is available if interested. I can provide photos.
Application: Crushing/Grinding/Mixing ore, metal, coating, glass, ceramics, soil, make-ups, reagent, tea, pill, capsule, electronic unit, new materials and so on.
Very heavy and solid. Stoneware, Cast Iron, Metal dial handle
I have a pair of these ball mill jars, plus the ball grinding media. The second one is seen in the last images.
This listing is for the one Norton Canister. The second is listed separately. They are exactly the same, besides the shape of the Norton logo and general wear on each canister.
No cracks or chips. Has rubber seal and screws tight. Shows some natural wear from use.
