Antique Russian Triptych / Traveling Icon with Christ, Mary and St. John - Bronze / Brass and Enamel / Three Folding Panels / 19th Century

Orthodox Russian Religious Iconography!

This is indeed a very special piece. It is a traveling icon or skladen from Russia that has three folding panels and is called a triptych. These types of Russian iconography were used as portable altars. Although they are quite heavy, they are small and could easily fit inside a pocket or bag. As you can see from the photos, these triptychs could stand on their own and be set anywhere you wanted to pray.

The exquisite piece has Christ in the center, with Mother Mary on His left side and St. John the Evangelist on His right side (as you are looking directly at the piece). I believe this piece is brass, or it may be bronze. Either way, it has a beautiful, antiqued patina and is simply lovely. Inside, each panel is "backed" by colorful enamel. There is a turquoise green at the top of each panel, white in the center and a dark cerulean blue on the bottom on each panel.

The actual craftsmanship and artwork is extraordinary. The lettering, the angel wings and the decorative Russian orthodox cross on the outside cover are intricately detailed and precise. It's truly a piece of art.
