compensation: $25-$35 per hour
employment type: full-time
experience level: senior level
job title: Shop manager
Are you a gearhead with a knack for organization and a passion for turning classic cars into modern masterpieces? Do you thrive in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same, and you get to wear multiple hats? If so, we want you!

Our custom car shop specializes in affordable restomods, breathing new life into vintage vehicles with modern performance and comfort, all while keeping them accessible to a wider audience. We're looking for a highly motivated and versatile individual to join our growing team as a Shop Manager / Technician / Office Manager.

This unique hybrid role is perfect for someone who can transition between managing the day-to-day operations of the shop, handling administrative tasks, and getting their hands dirty on our exciting projects. I need somebody to help keep the operation operating, somebody to support or lead office and shop management and provide billable technician support to a variety of custom projects. The split will be roughly 50% office and shop management and 50% billable technician work. We can start with more technician work if that's where you're comfortable and add shop management as we go if that's easier.

There is a lot of flexibility in what is involved, so the position can be catered to your experience and interests. This is intended to be a 9-5 job, but if you need a flexible work schedule, we can support that. The primary work needs to be during normal business hours, but starting earlier or working later are options. We do a huge variety of work so it’s not the same old thing day after day. Plus, I provide lunch every day!

What You'll Bring:
- The ability to take responsibility for getting things done and being a leader (or a trusted second in command) and mentor
- Proven experience in an automotive shop environment is a must. This could be in a traditional repair shop or a custom or hot rod shop
- Strong mechanical skills & hands-on experience with vehicle repair & customization with several years experience. Ideally this includes significant diagnostic experience
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Good problem solver & diagnostic technician
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience with shop management and basic office software
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Once a task or project is identified, you will understand expectations and work with minimal direction. I might forget, and I need you to keep projects moving
- Do it right the first time and build it like it's your car, even if you might build it differently
- I want people who can work smarter more than work harder. The goal is to get things done quickly and efficiently so we can save plenty of time for life outside of work
- We will try new things and do things in new ways to be innovative in our product and services. This is part of working “smarter” You might not have outside of the box ideas, but you need to be able to embrace these ideas as we or a customer requests them
- Basic project management / estimating experience
- A passion for classic cars and restomod culture!

What you'll do:

Shop management
- Help coordinate projects and workload for all technicians. Helping identify or remove roadblocks in projects and work to determine best next projects
- Project planning and project management, keeping projects on track. Coordinate project timelines and workflows to ensure efficient completion of builds
- Assist in estimating project costs and preparing quotes for customers
- Support CAD / CAM CNC plasma table / CNC bending and other new tools including helping develop these skills / products and identifying opportunities to use them. (No need for existing CAD / CNC experience)
- Develop and lead SOPs / processes / best practices to create safe, efficient work. This will include using processes you’ve used in previous roles to helping develop new ones
- Oversee shop safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Support and mentor other technicians, ensuring quality workmanship and efficient operations

Technician work
- Perform a variety of billable project tasks, including diagnostics, repairs, and installations on classic vehicles and modern drivetrains.
- Support other techs as needed with an extra set of hands or technical expertise
- This can be light duty work if needed & will be catered to your experience & abilities
- Contribute to restomod builds, which may involve engine swaps, suspension upgrades, wiring, fabrication, and custom interior work
- Troubleshoot and problem-solve mechanical and electrical issues

Office management
- Handle incoming calls and emails with professionalism and excellent customer service.
- Talk to potential customers and add information to waiting list
- Take photos / video / project write ups for social media content
- Support Invoicing and confirming technician hours, billable hours, and rework
- Manage administrative tasks, including scheduling appointments, invoicing, managing customer communications, and maintaining records
- Oversee parts and shop supplies ordering and vendor relations
- Maintain a clean and organized office environment

Bonus Points If You Have:
- Experience with specific restomod processes like LS or other engine swaps, custom wiring, or fabrication
- Experience with automotive diagnostic or shop management software
- Experience with CAD / CAM / CNC / Machining including CNC machining and cutting, CAD experience or interest in learning CAD for 3D printing and CNC cutting. We also have a 3D scanner that we’d like to use more
- Project planning or project management experience
- Experience with modern EFI / GDI / Turbocharged engines

Why Join Us?
- Be part of a passionate and talented team dedicated to bringing cool cars to life.
- Work on exciting and diverse projects every day.
- We are an ethical company working to provide employees and customers high value and work to exceed expectations wherever possible
- Opportunity for growth and to make a significant impact on our business.
- A supportive and collaborative work environment.

Who are we?

We specialize in engine and chassis swap RestoMods, but do a range of mechanical repair, rebuilding, and re-engineering on a huge variety of classic vehicles. We have a relaxed atmosphere and work on a lot of cool vehicles with a very flexible work day. We don’t shy away from projects with big engines, but we also build projects with tiny, efficient engines or even electric drive-trains. We build affordable cars at our core, but don’t turn down the opportunity to build high dollar customs either. Ultimately, we listen to our customers to build what they want while guiding them to the build that fits their needs, not our desires.

In addition to full RestoMods, we install EFI kits, electric power steering, updated brakes or suspension, etc. The emphasis is on keeping interesting vintage and classic cars on the street with modern amenities and reliability. Most of the work we do is mechanical and electrical. We partner with painters and upholsterers to finish builds when needed.

Currently in the shop or recently finished projects include a Porsche 912, a Dodge A100 EV conversion, multiple Ford Mustangs, a Land Rover Defender 90, and a Jeep Wrangler as well as an 80s Bronco Restomod and 90s Utilimaster Ice Cream truck. These range from rebuilds, to engine swaps, to full custom frame Restomods.

I am a mechanical engineer with two decades of engineering experience and close to four decades playing with and building cars. I have repaired, modified and raced a lot of cars over the years, but I mostly love unusual or obscure cars. I have combined these experiences, building cars from an engineering perspective: Planning, quality, and process is the key to our success. We have been in business since 2018 and are now looking to continue to grow our business with your help

The shop is in Brooklyn Center near downtown Robbinsdale. We are booked out with projects for many months, so there is no shortage of work. Our waiting list only seems to grow. Perhaps with your support we can work to start to catch up on projects to maintain a more manageable waiting list.

Pay is $25-35 / hour depending on experience. Overtime is available as projects warrant, but never required. We do not offer health insurance, but do offer a very flexible workplace as well as supplemental insurance.

If you're ready to combine your administrative prowess, leadership skills, and technical expertise into one exciting role, we encourage you to apply!
