Instructor: Rick Haneman
Instrument: Percussion & Drum Set
Why take lessons? Face-to-face lessons provide the best foundation for any student by providing basic fundamentals and guidance on "healthy playing." Proper posture, technique and musical approach will ensure that the playing experience is of total enjoyment.
I teach students at all stages of musical development. I work with each student to customize a program that facilitates their learning style while addressing their musical needs and aspirations. My students learn good practice habits, how to approach challenging material, how to prepare for auditions, recitals and concerts, and how to develop their own creative voice. My overarching goal is for students to discover the joy of playing music while developing a high degree of musicianship.
About me: I currently hold a Bachelors degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. I have been performing as a percussionist and drum set player for over a decade and have been teaching privately for over four years. Presently, I serve as the Percussion Instructor at The Blake School and at St. Michael - Albertville High School where I work with students on concert percussion, drum set and music theory. In addition, I perform locally and regionally via drum set with jazz hip-hop group Arlo. Please take a moment to view my website.
How to sign-up: Please reach out to me directly via email or phone.
Lesson location: I offer lessons at my home studio or at the students home depending on the equipment required for each lesson. For in-studio lessons, parents and guardians are more than welcome to wait for their student while the lesson is taking place.

"Rick has been a tremendous percussion instructor for our 7-year-old son. He is patient but also is able to strike the right balance in challenging him to try more complex beats. He's always prompt and communicates well in confirming lesson times. I highly recommend Rick - he's a natural at teaching and an exceptional percussionist."

"Rick is the best drum instructor I have ever had! I've tried many instruments before, but this is the first time I've actually wanted to stick with it. He goes at whatever pace you feel comfortable, and his goal is to meet your personal goals. I have only been taking lessons for a few months and have already seen great improvements. I highly recommend taking lessons from Rick!"
- Anabel K. | Adult Student
"I'm an intermediate, experienced drummer trying to improve my skills. I found Rick online and tasked him with improving my technique because for years I've been struggling with my weak hand, trying to bring it up to the level of my other hand. He's patient, knowledgeable, and has been effective in correcting bad habits I'd developed over years of drumming. Thanks to Rick and a lot of practice on my part I've improved my drumming skills and have really seen some positive change for the first time. I recommend him as a drum teacher; I've had other instructors and Rick is the first one to actually help me improve my skills."
- Matt E. | Adult Student
"Under Richard's tutelage, the students have improved both as ensemble players and as grounded percussionists. Richard's lessons balance the need for building technical and musical skills with the need to master concert repertoire. When working on band music, he makes sure that students understand notational, technical, ensemble and equipment issues. At the same time, he comes to each lesson with a clear plan for building such fundamentals as scales and snare drum rudiments."
