Aggressive next-generation styling takes the Hyper Naked look to a level with sharper, more defined lines and minimal bodywork. A bi-functional LED headlamp is shrouded in a cover, creating a compact and unified relationship with the fuel tank and tail section. SP specification raises the bar even further with distinctive SP colorway, polished aluminum swingarm, premium suspension, Brembo® brakes, additional electronics and a smart key for an unmatched Hyper Naked experience. Yamaha's renowned 890cc liquid-cooled CP3 engine is light, powerful and provides a thrilling wave of torque from low rpms. A combination of carefully tuned induction sound and distinctive crossplane triple exhaust note provides a resonance which only heightens the feeling of acceleration. Throttle valves are governed by the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) system enabling finer actuation and precise control. The MT-09 SP features an advanced six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that matches the base performance of proven IMU in the YZF-R1 Superbike. Data collected from the IMU and wheel speed sensors enable a high-tech suite of rider aids including a four-mode Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), front wheel Lift Control System (LIF) and a two-mode Brake Control System. Each of these systems can be turned off and Traction Control, Slide Control and Lift Control can have their levels of intervention adjusted to preference. With its best-in-class electronic control technology, the MT-09 SP gives you the ultimate versatility in varying weather and surface conditions. The MT-09 SP features an Assist and Slipper (A&S) clutch for a lighter clutch lever pull and smoother chassis behavior during downshifts. The MT-09 SP is equipped with Yamaha's third-generation Quick Shift System (QSS) enabling quick, clutchless upshifts and downshifts under both acceleration and deceleration. The system has two settings. Setting 1 enables shifting up while accelerating and shifting down when decelerating. Setting 2 expands functionality across a wider range of situations by permitting downshifts while accelerating and upshifts when decelerating. This advanced system makes full-on acceleration more exciting and downshifting faster and smoother with less chassis disruption when changing gears. The MT-09 SP boasts premium-spec Brembo® Stylema monoblock brake calipers paired with a Brembo® radial master cylinder and large 298mm dual front discs for the ultimate in stopping power and finger-tip control. Premium SP-exclusive suspension brings Supersport-level handling and precision to the Hyper Naked class. The 41mm DLC coated KYB® forks and Öhlins® rear shock feature a higher spring rate offering outstanding stability during more spirited riding. Set-up can be fine tuned to suit a variety of different riding situations with the forks fully adjustable for preload, rebound, high- and low-speed compression damping, while the fully adjustable Öhlins® shock is equipped with a remote preload adjuster to enable quick and easy changes. A full-color five-inch TFT display provides the rider with the option of five different themes, including the SP-specific TRACK theme, to suit different riding situations or individual preference. The display is navigated through integrated handlebar switches. Button shape and feel have been extensively refined to provide intuitive operation in a compact, easy-to-use solution. Riders can link their smartphone to the TFT display via Yamaha's free Y-Connect app to receive message notifications, calls and listen to music (through use of an aftermarket Bluetooth® headset, not provided). Additionally, full turn-by-turn navigation is available through the Garmin® StreetCross app to make each journey easier. The MT-09 SP is the first Yamaha Hyper Naked to feature a Smart Key System. When the smart key is within a specified range of the motorcycle, such as in your pocket, the engine can be started by turning a designed switch. The system also features a lock and unlock option for the fuel tank cap for added convenience. The MT-09 SP receives full LED lighting including the distinctive LED headlight design, slim LED taillight and compact LED turn signals. Innovative turn signal functions further enhance the riding experience. A soft click of the indicator switch will flash the turn signals three times, while a full click will flash continuously. Turn signals will also self-cancel after 15 seconds and once the bike has travelled for more than 500 feet.
