condition: excellent
make / manufacturer: John Deere
model name / number: 140
1971 John Deere 140 H1, Type T0581, Serial #032380M. Purchased in October 2005. The seller painted the tractor and mower deck. The deck is a 46/48 deck. Soon after my purchase, I bought many new John Deere parts and also bought all H3 components from a 1971 140 that was being parted out.

The tractor was used very little after purchase and then not used for many years until 2023. That year, I had a local shop that specializes in classic John Dere lawn and gargen tractors install the new parts, convert it to a H3 and get it running. The new parts installed were:
- Front axle spindle bushings
- Front axle pivot bushing
- Tie rod ends
- Steering column
- Rear axle seals
- Ammeter gauge
- Dash decal
- Throttle and choke lever plastic tips
- Rear hydraulics (new kit)

At the same time, the follwing was also done:
- Used steering wheel (no cracks)
- New battery
- New points, condensor, coil and voltage regulator
- New Carlisle tires

I used it for about five hours in 2023. I ran it at about 1/2 throttle and it ran great. Then I went to WOT for about 2-3 secons and it started missing and died. I discovered the points had come loose and the gap was incorrect. I set the gap to .020 and it ran, but with a knock. I set the point gap to .015 and the knock is less, but still there. It could just be spark knock that I haven't been able to get rid of. There is also an oil pan gasket leak. There has never been blue smoke at startup or under load. All liights, cigarette lighter and PTO work. I have had the deck on and ran it, but never mowed with it.

I have the following manuals, etc.:
- Operator's manual JD 140 serial #30001 - 38000
- Operator's manual 41 & 48 rotary mowers
- Parts catalog JD 140 serial #30001 -
- Service manual JD 140 serial #30001 -
- Owner's manual Kohler models K241, K301, K321 and K341

I have listed the condition as excellent, which it is, except for the potential engine problem with the knocking.

This is also listed on ebay and the reserve price is less than the asking price in this CL ad.

If you have any questions, please contact me and I will respond.
