John Deere X324 Lawn Tractor with 22 hp Kawasaki 675cc 2-cylinder engine. IMO this engine is better than the Briggs engine.
It has 4 wheel steering which give is an incredibly tight turn radius. It can mow neatly around a 12" obstacle!
The deck can easily be raised from the operator's station by stepping on the left side pedal. If you wish to change the cut height, you can set that with the dial on the deck beneath the control console.
This 48" deck is an effective size for residential mowing. If you go up one size in deck, you will scalp more readily if the lawn has unlevel places (and the mower will barely fit a 5' x 8' trailer). If you go down one size, that reduces your swath by 15%, increasing mowing time.
This moves about twice as fast as a walk-behind mower, and mows a 48" wide swath (more than twice as wide as the typical 21" walk-behind). This will reduce your mowing time by about 3/4 compared to a walk-behind. If you are spending an hour or more mowing, you are going to wonder what you waited for.
I do a great job of maintaining all of my equipment and vehicles, such as oil changes, quality oil, quality filters, etc. It is garage kept. The finish shines. The oil is clean.
I put a set of new tires and new Oregon mulching blades on it last summer, and made sure the deck was level. I took a picture of one blade, and added a picture so you can see how much better it is compared to the OEM blade. The Oregon G3 is thicker, wider, has twice the cutting surface, and adds secondary cutting surfaces on the back of the blades to further cut the grass.
Fuel capacity 3.5 gallons, which is enough for me to mow my yard several times on one fill up.
Built in 2006, it has 2135 hours on it. That is equivalent to driving a car 68320 miles at average auto speeds.
Why sell it? I've been wanting a zero-turn. I finally bit the bullet last week and bought a John Deere Z655. Consumer reports has John Deere as the top 3 zero turn lawnmowers and the top 3 lawn tractors. It has a 54" deck (which is how I know about scalping, have to make sure this deck is level, and that it will barely fit in my trailer...).
Consumer Reports also has the John Deere X354 as the #1 lawn tractor lineal descendant of this X324, also with 4-wheel steering.
Consumer Reports: "The John Deere X354 is a pricey choice ($5000), but in performance it’s near perfection. It aced every performance test we could throw at it: bagging, cutting evenness, handling, mulching, and side-discharging. Its only weakness is that it’s noisy—something you can expect from any gas lawn tractor. What else can you expect from this Deere? Plenty of features, including cruise control, automatic drive, a high-backed seat, a fuel-level gauge visible from that seat, a washout port, and a very easy mode-changing system called MulchControl. What’s more, there’s a generous 4-year warranty. One drawback: Its 42-inch deck is on the narrow side for lawn tractors, so it may take you longer to mow a big property than with some competitors. John Deere is the only brand of lawn tractor to earn excellent reliability and owner satisfaction scores from CR’s members."
The deck by itself sells for $1370 on ebay. Link below.
