If you are a serious competitive rider, I highly recommend the Speedplay. These are my favorite road bike pedals. I was always clipped in first and got away from stoplights at the front of the peloton, because it is so easy and intuitive to get the cleat on the pedal.
What made me change was the occasional stops the peloton would make at convenience stores for a bathroom break. That's when I figured out why everyone else was using Shimano MTB pedals. The MTB shoes have projections that keep the cleat off the ground, allowing you a more nearly normal gait when dismounted.
