Built from what I believe to be wormy chestnut, this child's rocker is sturdy and comfortable, especially in warm weather, with its caned seat and back. I can't identify the style of the carved motif on the top rail of its back, but it evokes some classical types. It's been in storage for the last 20+ years.
American chestnut is a very durable hardwood, but the blight that wiped it out, beginning in 1900, left dead trees standing. By the time much of that wood was cut, it had been subject to insect boring, resulting in the minute "wormy" tunnels, which don't significantly affect structural strength.
Caning, which was replaced at some point, is in excellent condition. Chair is solid and stable; no play in the joints. The apparent original finish is in good shape, allowing for the spots where nail holes from a previous seat were filled with putty.
