The Cook prepares meals following established menus and recipes while maintaining a safe and sanitary work environment in order to facilitate an exceptional guest experience. As a member of the culinary team, the cook performs dining tasks, such as cleaning, running the dishwasher, and serving guests for meals and special events. Hours are flexible (up to 32 hours weekly) and may include daytime, evenings, weekends and some holidays.

The Cook will enjoy the beauty of our buildings and grounds, including free use of our outdoor 5+ miles of hiking trails, outdoor labyrinth, athletic field, marsh walk, indoor pool, whirlpool, and sauna, and conference spaces as added perks. Meals and events are free while at work. All retreats, concerts, and other events are discounted during non-work hours.

Essential Functions
1. Prepare food for all meals and breaks with consistent quality, following established recipes and procedures.
2. Prioritize schedule to ensure all meals are prepared and served on time.
3. Maintain a sanitary kitchen, following MN State Department of Health regulations.
4. Anticipate the next day’s menus, pull needed items from freezers, complete prep work as needed.
5. Prepare alternative meals for special diets and food allergies as needed.
6. Ensure proper handling and service of all food for special diets and allergies so as to avoid cross-contamination.
7. Keep the dining room in guest-ready condition at all times: tables clean, chairs pushed in, beverage bar and refrigerator clean and stocked.
8. Clean and put away dishes for smaller groups and as needed.
9. Clean the kitchen and kitchen equipment as you work; sweep, mop, and remove kitchen garbage at the end of each shift.
10. Participate in staff meetings and on-the-job-training as requested.
11. Respond attentively and flexibly to guest requests and communicate guest needs to other staff.
12. Maintain a productive working relationship with culinary staff, supervisor, and retreat center staff.
13. Observe and follow all safety procedures to prevent injury to self, guests, and staff.
14. Other duties as assigned.

1. Commitment to our mission of hospitality and understanding of the centrality of food service in that mission.
2. Serve Safe certification or ability to obtain certification within 4 months.
3. One-year professional cooking experience; scratch cooking experience preferred.
4. Capacity to maintain composure in stressful situations.
5. Ability to take direction, work independently, and work collaboratively.
6. Great customer service skills.
