1890-1895 H.J. HEINZ Ketchup Bottle #56 Embossed Octagonal Mpls Mn. DUG
This is a vintage Heinz ketchup bottle dating between 1890 and 1895. The vintage, octagonal condiment bottle is embossed on the front "H.J. Heinz Co." in a circle with a keystone shape and an illegible word or two underneath. The bottom of the bottle is embossed "H.J. Heinz Co. - 56 - Pat'd June 17, 1890". The clear, Victorian Era bottle was produced by the Heinz Company glass factory in Sharpsburg,PA, a Pittsburgh suburb. Similarly styled bottle tops bore metal dust caps or corks. The number 56 bottle was the first to bear a keystone shaped design. The antique ketchup bottle is in great shape, free from breaks or cracks with the exception of a tiny chip on the front. (See photos) There are a few age related bubbles in the glass. Clarity is great with little sediment deposit. The bottle measures about 8" tall and 2.25" wide.
Henry J. Heinz began bottling vegetables in embossed bottles around 1860 in Sharpsburg, PA. The company expanded over the years and became popular for producing condiments such as ketchup, pickle, relish, horseradish, mustard and other sauces, including Heinz 57 Sauce.
