The Washington County Meals on Wheels program is provided by the HSI Eldercare division. It is a non-profit service delivering hot nutritious noontime meals Monday through Friday (with extra meals available for weekends) and providing at least one personal contact each day. The program is designed for those who are homebound, age 60 and over or who are chronically disabled.
Meals on Wheels depends on volunteers to deliver the meals and one route can be completed in 60 minutes over the noon hour. A specific need exists in Mahtomedi. Program staff is eager to work with volunteers’ interests and schedules – choose to deliver one day a year, a month or a week! Volunteer regularly or be on-call. This program is ideal for group volunteering (e.g. churches, businesses, community organizations, etc).
Volunteer drivers must be at least 18-years-old, have a valid driver's license, reliable vehicle with auto insurance and be able to carry bag of meals to their car. Those over 55 may qualify for personal injury insurance while driving and mileage paid up to $15 per month. In addition to drivers, Meals on Wheels program seeks site greeters to ensure that meals are delivered (Mon – Fri from 10:30 – 11:30 am).
We offer volunteer orientation, training, support and recognition. Please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Sara Umbreit, at sumbreit@hsicares.org or (651) 275-4306 to volunteer. To learn more about HSI and its volunteer opportunities visit www.hsicares.org.
