We need a drummer for our new project in the Twin Cities area (We are located in North Bloomington and South Richfield). My name is Tyler (22) and my brother Greg (19) and I are looking to start an alternative rock band. Some of our influences include Beatles, White Stripes, REM, Bright Eyes, Cheap Trick and Bob Dylan. Between the two of us we've had a few bands. Together we had The Hutto Brothers and The Pallbearers. My brother had Dark Nightly and I had Human Rights Day. Our set list is about 50% current rock and the rest filled out with some of the best from the 90s, a few 80s and even a few 70s tunes. Mila Vocal Ensemble is a professional women's choir committed to the authentic reproduction of vocal traditions from over 30 countries in over a dozen distinct vocal styles. The majority of our repertoire comes from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Ukraine, Russia and other Balkan and Baltic countries. Garrison Keillor has said of Mila, "They sing chords that Lutherans do not have in them. You'd have to stay out of church for a long time to sing this music." Mila has performed to international acclaim, always pushing the boundaries of rhythm, harmony and styling. This versatile ensemble typically performs a cappella but its well-rounded repertoire also makes collaboration with instrumentalists a natural fit. Mila performs in concert, at public and private events, schools, festivals and churches and also leads vocal and cultural workshops.

We are auditioning potential new singers on Thursday, December 3. We're expecially interested in women with one of those miraculous ranges down to C below middle C: call us, female tenors! Hey guys

Interested in possibly playing some shows? I know many of you yak about not playing enough and know how hard it is to wait and wait around from venues about playing a show or never hearing back. I book shows here and there for fun and am looking for more bands to use. I am tired of people with inflated heads and sticks in their asses, looking for some good-hearted, fun, badass musicians who are up for playing some "good-times" shows around the cities.

Do mostly metal shows, but love doing good punk stuff, too. Thrash, Death, Black, Stoner, Punk, Grundge, good ol'fashioned Metal....not too picky as long as it's good! Rule number one, Don't be a douchebag, because who wants to deal with that.

I try to put bands together that would fit or make a good show. Also, if I've got your contact info I might let you know about other good shows going around the cities. Because MUSICIANS NEED TO SUPPORT OTHER MUSICIANS. Don't expect everyone to come out to your shows if you don't go out to anyone else's show. That's selfish. And face it, we're all human here (well at least I hope so, haha) and enjoy other people's company. No matter your age, it never hurts to make new friends.

Also, the more flexible and quick to react you and your band are to taking shows or at least communicate back, the more shows you will eventually play. Simple. Don't take your sweet time to getting back to bookers, everything's on a time crunch. Bookers talk to other bookers. Club/bar owners talk to other club/bar owners.

SO, I might have a couple dates soon to fill, otherwise, in the near future. This is not a guarantee for a show, but more so an opening to network. I go to a lot of local metal shows too, so sometimes it's nice to go check out new stuff.

Drummer: Someone that can play hand drums mixed with a little egg shaker. I love this type of drumming with acoustic music opposed to a full drum kit.

Female Backup Vocals: Looking for something simple and sweet, not really looking for a big booming voice. Would be great if you could also keep a beat with a tambourine.

Keyboard: I'm looking for someone creative that's open to many styles of playing. One that can put a simple dreamlike quality to some songs, and punch it home on others.

I would also possibly consider some lead guitar and some violin at some point.

I run this ad for the Jazz Workshop just about every week because it seems like every week there is someone who sees it for the first time and turns up. Or sometimes they don't see it and they post an ad like "looking for someone to learn to play jazz with." Well, we're the someones. Or one of the someones, except I can't think of any other someones outside of local colleges and music schools. We're clean (mostly), friendly (generally), courteous (usually) and we have a broad range of participants from professionals to enthusiasts and to folks just sticking a toe in the water a little bit. We have a heckuva a lot of fun every week with this stuff. So come on over and give it a try! Heck, it's even free. The Jazz Workshop in the Park at McRae Park in South Minneapolis has been helping people develop the ability to play jazz for three decades. We meet almost every Saturday from 12:00-3:45 between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Started by Sam Favors and Gene Adams, the Jazz Workshop has been happening since about 1978, giving aspiring jazz musicians an opportunity to develop their chops and learn the craft of playing fine music. Musicians of all ages are welcome and there is no cost. We mostly play songs from the "Real Book(s)" and other standards (and we'll try to play almost whatever jazz charts you bring). The basic skills you need are some facility in playing in all 12 keys, knowing some scales (major, minor and pentatonic are helpful), and being able to read a lead sheet reasonably well (perfect sight reading not required). It's a workshop, so we figure it's likely that you'll need to develop your skills rather than coming in with smoking chops ready to take the jazz world by storm. Instruction is informal- this is mainly learning by doing. If you have questions, ask! If you need the "Real Books," you can get them at local music stores like The Podium or Groth Music or online at Amazon.com.

If you play piano, we have an upright provided by the park (tuning is often a bit questionable with weather changes); we also have a small drum kit (bring your own sticks and brushes, and you might want to bring your cymbals in case you don't like ours). If you're a singer and you want something in a different key than the various "Real Books" provide, please bring at least a half-dozen copies of charts in the key you desire; transposed charts for Bb and Eb instruments are really appreciated.

We are a bass player and drummer putting together a post rock / post metal instrumental band, likely more in the metal/heavier side of things with a strong emphasis on atmosphere and dynamics. We're are in search of guitars.

2) Solid gear that's stage-ready (no blown speakers, you've got a tuner, etc.)

After getting laid off in January from a .com company, I moved to San Diego from Orange County about 4 months ago. After bouncin around a bit, I found a pad overlooking the Ocean and joined a band that was pretty much way passed its prime. The band is doing nothing special, so I finished writing about 8 songs for a project called Trace Elemental. I've been looking everywhere around here for musicians that want to record, tour etc. and do things right, but having lived in SoCal all my life, I can tell you it's next to impossible to motivate or get commitment out of most musicians around here. People from NY say that we're all Fruits Flakes and Nuts... they aren't too far off. (fuck them anywayz haha) Sure there's LA, but from my experience playing in bands for about 10 years, its 99% weak sauce up there too.

I caught a rockabilly/psychobilly band from MN that came through one of our local spots... great guys. We talked about Minn... and after speaking to other friends online, I was wondering if there's anyone up there that can give me perspective from the 'Craigslist musician search' type point of view. How much are rehearsal studios up there? How are the venues? Any studios with epic locations and superb gear/engineering? Do people go wild for rock music or.. what is the main genre? I've got a grip of questions and can provide any opinions about Orange County, San Diego, Los Angeles, Etc.

Down here its literally all cover bands, white boy reggae, and DJs. Stoners, burritos, and beach dudes. But not much ROCK. Fuck I just got hit up by the 'Red not Chili peppers' sayin how they make over $1000 a show. I'm not down to do that tho. Sublime cover bands do well with the 'bros' down in Pacific Beach. San Diego has a lot of culture compared to a shitty place like Orange County, but that's not saying too much. L.A. is loaded with music/art/culture and is spread out and very hard to live... in most parts of LA worth being at are very expensive...jobs are tight, parking is impossible, traffic is a nightmare, clubs are pay to play, tons of scammers etc. My old band brought in about $2500 to the Whiskey on Sunset, and we got paid about $150. The bartender made me pay $2.00 for ice water.

Anywayz, I'm considering relocation, at least temporarily, just to get piece of mind. and see what else is out there. I'm looking at MN and MO. Maybe Austin too. As far as bands paying BMI/ASCAP
First of all, you would put about 75% of the bands out of commission.
If the clubs want LIVE MUSIC or DJ or JUKEBOX they have to pay ASCAP,
so why make the bands pay, the club is going to end up paying anyway, unless
they never play anykind of music, live or pre-recorded.

Clubs aren't closing because of ASCAP fees, most close for a few reasons. One: most agents force overpriced groups down the club owners throat and Two: the quality of the musicianship/entertainment they hire is horrible. In many cases both One and Two come together in one nice neat package.
That goes for both original and cover bands. If you can't package and perform your material well enough to warrant
people to either pay a cover or stay in the club long enough to buy a drink or two to cover expenses and make a profit
then you really don't understand how a bar/club works, and you don't understand what people want.
Good luck blaming cover bands, since they are part of the reason live music exists.

I am a tubist, and would like to assemble a small brass ensemble for the specific mission of performing chamber music (mostly quartet arrangements of Baroque works) at gay weddings & wedding reception dinners. I hold an undergraduate degree in music and am a former teacher, so I am willing and able to run rehearsals, but I'm also perfectly willing to step aside and let a more advanced musician direct the group, should one join us. We will be a professional performing ensemble, but obviously it will be a "side gig" as I don't expect us to be anywhere near busy enough to make a significant income at it.

We will be based in the Twin Cities, and many gay ceremonies do transpire here, but since the courts of Iowa have chosen to lead the way on this particular civil rights issue, I suspect a lot of our shows will end up being a few hours down I-35 until our state sees fit to catch up with the cultural trends. I have a van sufficient to transport the group with overnight luggage and instruments, should the need arise.

The ideal line-up would include myself and four others (at least one on cornet, the other three being some combination of cornet, trumpet, french horn, euphonium, and perhaps trombone... maybe even a second tuba, though one of us would end up playing in a rather high register if that's the case.) Five members would mean we could still play our full repertoire of quartet music on gigs when any one member is unable to make it, and could also occasionally do some modern arrangements along the lines of The Canadian Brass and other noteworthy brass quintets.

Rehearsals will probably be weekly until our repertoire is set, then as-needed after that depending on how often we perform and how often we need to meet in order to keep our performance standards high.

Be proficient enough to play arrangements of Baroque chamber music (Bach, Gabrieli, Pachelbel, Purcel, etc.) and do them well. For chamber music, quality tone in particular is a must. Also, be dedicated enough to learn your parts *outside* of rehearsal. Beyond that, age and experience level is not much of an issue to me.

People plan weddings months (and sometimes years) in advance, so once we're assembled we will try to learn & polish up one or two short pieces to record on a demo CD and post on the web almost right away. Then we'll get to work building a long enough repertoire to entertain for an entire evening. Hopefully by the time we are ready to perform, we'll have some jobs lined up.

GLBT members slightly preferred, but that is not a requirement.

Using your logic, telling a club not to have cover bands is like telling a sports bar not to broadcast sporting events. Or would you prefer to walk into Joe Senser's on a Sunday afternoon only to have them replaying games from local high school teams?

Bar and clubs pay fees for having cover bands, they also pay huge fees to be able to broadcast sporting events. It's called PROMOTION. The idea is to get enough people through the door as to offset the cost of the fees and to turn a profit.
