Biography:
Giovanni Battista di Jacopo (1494-1540); (born March 8, 1495, Florence, Republic of Florence�died Nov. 14, 1540, Paris, Fr.) known as Rosso Fiorentino (meaning "the Red Florentine" in Italian), or Il Rosso, was an Italian Mannerist painter, in oil and fresco, belonging to the Florentine school.

Born in Florence Italy with the red hair that gave him his nickname, Rosso first trained in the studio of Andrea del Sarto alongside his contemporary, Pontormo. In late 1523, Rosso moved to Rome, where he was exposed to the works of Michelangelo, Raphael, and other Renaissance artists, resulting in the realignment of his artistic style.

Fleeing Rome after the Sacking of 1527, Rosso eventually went to France where he secured a position at the court of Francis I in 1530, remaining there until his death. Together with Francesco Primaticcio, Rosso was one of the leading artists, in fact a founder of the Chateau Fontainebleau as part of the "First School of Fontainebleau", spending much of his life there.

The ornamental style he developed influenced decorative arts across northern Europe. He remained in the royal service until his death. Following his death in 1540 (which, according to an unsubstantiated claim by Vasari, was a suicide [1]). Vasari, whose biography of Rosso also includes an entertaining story about his pet baboon, says that he killed himself in remorse after falsely accusing a friend of stealing money from him, but this may well be apocryphal.

Francesco Primaticcio took charge of the artistic direction at Fontainebleau. Rosso's reputation, along those of other stylized late Renaissance Florentines, was long out of favour in comparison to other more naturalistic and graceful contemporaries, but has revived considerably in recent decades. That his masterpiece is in a small city, away from the tourist track, was a factor in this, especially before the arrival of photography. His poses are certainly contorted, and his figures often appear haggard and thin, but his work has considerable power.

These two prints came from two volumes relating to Shells, Sea Urchins, and a variety of sea creatures. These volumes were published between 1791-1798, and were edited by Lamarck & Bruguiere. The backdrop of the publication was the French Revolution, when, in 1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette went to the guillotine. It was a time of great transformation in France & the reorganization in a democratic manner of many of the establishments previously dependent on the whims of royal patronage. The old Jardin des Plantes became the Mus�e National d�Histoire Naturelle (National Museum of Natural History), run by twelve professors in twelve different scientific fields, one of whom was Lamarck.
Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, born in 1744 to a military family, attended a Jesuit seminary for a short period before becoming a soldier, retiring with a distinguished battle record. Lamarck began to study medicine and botany; in 1778 his book on the plants of France, Flore Fran�aise, was published to great acclaim, in part due to the support of Buffon.
Buffon secured him a post as an underpaid assistant at the Jardin des Plantes, from which position he was able to propose the transformation of the Jardin des Plantes into the Natural History Museum was established. In the grandiose manner of the day, he was appointed to the study of �invertebrates� a word which he coined & a subject about which he knew little at the onset. He also coined the word �biology�.
The invertebrate collections at the Mus�e were enormous and rapidly growing, but poorly organized and classified. The professorship of �insects and worms� was definitely the least prestigious. But Lamarck rose to the challenge of creating a new field of biology, publishing many works & writings throughout his long career. While the ideas involved were not Lamarck�s own, he has come to personify pre-Darwinian ideas on evolution. Lamarckian evolution is now a discredited theory, but he was among the early scientist to entertain such theories & Darwin recognizes him in the Evolution of the Species.
His work was never popular during his lifetime. Lamarck did not enjoy the respect or prestige enjoyed by his patron Buffon or his colleague & rival Cuvier, who attempted to discredit his theories. Lamarck struggled with life long poverty & lack of recognition for his contributions to science. When he died, on December 28, 1829, he received a pauper�s funeral, buried in a grave for five years & then dug up, probably to be placed among the huge quantities of bones stored in the catacombs of Paris.
These two prints have undoubtedly been touched by those who participated in the French Revolution. Each original antique print is folio size, measuring approximately 9 inches by 12 inches, on strong, soft white chain lined paper. These have been beautifully hand colored in England by one of the few remaining professional colorists whose specialty is fish & shells.

The Basics of Weaving and Loom Technology

THE BEAUTY OF CARPETS also depends upon the quality of yarns that go into their construction. The warp consists of a set of parallel yarns held taut on a loom. The weft is composed of cross-wise yarns that interlace with the length-wise warp yarns as weaving progresses. The pile is formed by rows of what are called knots projecting from the foundation of interlacing warp and weft. Each knot is formed by inserting a supplementary yarn and wrapping it around a pair of warps. After weaving, the pile is cut to a uniform height.

Only the pile yarns are visible on the surface of a carpet. It is the pile that carries the colors, designs, and patterns. Thus, Oriental carpets are two-dimensional in the appearance of surface design; they are, however, three-dimensional in structure.

The type of knot used in the construction of a carpet is one of several technical characteristics which, when considered with style, provides a means of grouping Oriental rugs. Comparing rugs with similar technical and stylistic features may help in figuring out where they may have come from and who wove them.

FIELD PATTERNS AND BORDER PATTERNS in all handmade Oriental pile carpets rely upon repeated sequences of knots. It is primarily in the choices of color, and in the repetition of selected designs (represented by specified sequences of knots that traditional border patterns and field patterns are achieved.
